In previous blog posts regarding music for weddings we’ve been sharing with you all with our favorite wedding songs, from your first dance, to processional music, to the special dances you share with your family members; we’ve about covered it all. However, one list of songs we have not covered that every bride should have or at least be aware of is the “Do Not Play List.”
It’s very common for a couple to know what songs or at least what type of music they want their wedding entertainment to play at their wedding but very rarely does a couple really sit down and think what songs they absolutely DO NOT want to hear. After all, there’s nothing worse than hearing some creepy breakup song during a romantic evening, even if it is a Top 40 hit. Well, we’re here to help you this week by providing a list of songs we frequently see on our do not playlists from our clients and common “no, no” songs that might be some “go to’s” for any mobile disc jockey, live band, acoustic artist, guitar players, pianists, violinist, string duo, trio or quartet.
The “Do Not Play List” is something that we include on our music worksheet here at SGM Events. Of course our music worksheet has all of the favorite songs sections to fill out, as well but what if there is a song that you absolutely hate? The “Do Not Play List” is the one section on our worksheet that tell our mobile San Diego wedding DJs or wedding bands for hire what not to play during your wedding day. It can give a wedding MC the perfect understanding of where to take this wedding with the announcements and what kind of demographic and age group the crowd might be.
Want to know what we commonly see on our music worksheets? First off, here are the songs that almost no one wants played at their weddings anymore. Sure these songs are fun and all-age-appropriate but there’s absolutely nothing elegant, sophisticated, or hip about them and there is a good chance these songs might clear the dance floor permanently.
- Chicken Dance
- Macarena
- Electric Slide
- YMCA
- Hokey Pokey
- Locomotion
- Cha Cha Slide
- Limbo Rock
Other songs to avoid are any mood-killers or break-up songs. Nothing free’s up a dance floor faster than a song about a break up.
- Police – Every Breath You Take
- Kool and the Gang – Celebration
- Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You
- Celine Dion – My Heart Will Go On
- Sister Sledge – We Are Family
- Eric Clapton – Tears in Heaven
- Gloria Gaynor – I Will Survive
- Wang Chung – Everybody (Have Fun Tonight)
- Rick Springfield – Jesse’s Girl
- Billy Idol – White Wedding
- Beyonce – Single Ladies
- Carole King – Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
These are just a few suggestions for your do not playlist, but it is important to sit down with your wedding entertainment agency prior to the wedding and fill out a music worksheet with specifics about what you do and do not want to hear. Whether you book a mobile disc jockey or a local mobile band or an acoustic vocalist or musician for hire this is a very important step! Another important issue to talk about with your wedding entertainment is requests. As a couple you will need to work out whether your entertainment can take requests from guests or not. Usually this is not an issue but can become one if a guest requests songs that are on your do not playlist. Little issues like this can be avoided on your special night if you take the time to work them out prior!
